Goodbye Paci

Posted on 12:24 PM by Unknown
A lot of people beat themselves up about the whole pacifier issue.  Should we give them one?  Will it affect their eating ability or desire?  Will it inhibit speech or cause future dental problems?  When is the best time to take it away?
Photoanhour 1
We decided pretty early on, I think, to not really take a stance.  If the kids wanted it, that was fine, if they didn't, that was fine too.  We bought the orthopedic ones for the sake of dental whatnot, and decided that we would take it away if there seemed to be a problem, but not necessarily at a specific age or anything like that.  This is just what we decided.
RP 5
Now, living the life of public transportation, I have to say that the paci has very often been a lifesaver.  Bored, cranky, annoyed, tired Hannah on the bus/ tube/ train/ airplane promptly received her paci and was quickly pacified.  Naturally.  It definitely hasn't inhibited her speech, her teeth have been fine, etc.  But she was growing increasingly demanding for her paci at random times of the day, not just bed time like we tried to do.  Also, the germ factor is pretty high with something that we tote all around town and on the bus, and that goes directly into her mouth.  So we decided that it was time.
RP 2
I didn't want to give it up until we were back from our trip to the states, since I knew we would need it to help soothe her to sleep in the various different places that we were staying, keep her calm on long car rides that she wasn't used to, assist her in getting over the jet lag, and assist me in keeping her quiet on those long plane rides.  Chris was away for a conference almost as soon as we were back in the UK, but once he was home I decided it was time.

We clipped it on a Sunday night.  We had to rock her a bit that night, but overall she was fine about it and would tell you quickly was broken and in the trash.  But in true "You've got to be kidding me about the timing of this thing" form, Tuesday night she cried all night long, by Wednesday had a very runny nose and temperature, and we discovered on Friday that she had an ear infection.  Also, 2 top molars that were just through the skin.  And 2 bottom molars that were just below. (You could see them and feel them, but they weren't out.  Yuck.)
Anyway, we contemplated getting her a new paci, just for the week, and then taking it away once the teeth and infection were gone.  But then we decided that this is the new normal around here- now if she's having a rough time settling herself down to sleep because of an ear infection, or teeth, or any other reason, we have to be the ones to help her through it.  Chris and I (and the rocking chair) are the new pacifiers.
But now we're almost on the other side of it, and it wasn't so bad.

Reversible Summer and Cloud Roly Poly Dress

Posted on 1:10 PM by Unknown

Rolypoly 8

So I finally used this incredibly fun, girly, summery fabric that I bought months ago.  It has these adorable little "scenes" of little girls doing summery outdoor activities, (picking apples, feeding chicks, reading books, etc.) and I didn't want to cut into them.  So this Roly Poly Pinafore pattern, which uses a big cut of fabric, seemed to be pretty perfect.

Rolypoly 6

I ended up cutting the back pieces at a slight angle since they hang at a slant across the back and I wanted the "scenes" to be pretty much straight up and down.  It wasn't perfect but it worked.

Rolypoly 3

Also, since the front has a center pleat I wanted to put a cute little "scene" right underneath it.  It almost looks like you're peeking into a little tent where the girl is reading, with some bunting strung across the top.  One of those little details that no one else will care about but I think is cute. :)  Which is fine.

Rolypoly 4Rolypoly 7

On the flip side I used the same blue chambray that I used for these bubble shorts.  (3/4 of a yard went a LONG way I think!)

Rolypoly 9

But my favorite part are the pockets.

Rolypoly 11

Clouds.  I know, right?  I love them.

Rolypoly 12

I had cut them out in blue, and this floral fabric was the inner lining.  But I set them down on the fabric just to see the placement, and immediately decided that they just had to stay that way.  Floral clouds are totally fine, right? Right.

Rolypoly 15

However, the next time that I add cloud pockets, I'll make sure to put them lower on the skirt.  They are close enough to the waist of the dress that if Hannah has been sitting for a while, or crouching down playing in the dirt, then the top is folded over a bit when she stands up.  No big deal, just something that's good to know.

Rolypoly 17

Also, this is the first time that I've made this dress, and I based the size on her chest measurement.  It does fit great across her shoulders and chest but is a bit shorter than I would like.

Rolypoly 19

Even Chris noticed this.

Does she need pants to wear with this?  It's a bit short.

No, she doesn't need pants, she has bloomers on.  But yes, it is a little short.

Rolypoly 20Rolypoly 21

It's okay because I still think it will be adorable over a long sleeved shirt with some tights, but it's kind of a bummer to sew something that is a bit on the small side, for the sake of longevity.  Like I said, it works, but I think next time I will make the same width as this time, but size up for the length, just to give my girl a little more wiggle-room.  Literally.

Cheese, indeed. :)

Hannah Doll

Posted on 1:53 PM by Unknown

Hannahdoll 5

I am a gift-giver.  I think I've said that before.  Even when I was little I would sometimes get in trouble for using all of my birthday money to buy people's Christmas presents, but this is how it is when you have a November birthday.

Hannahdoll 6

But when it was a week until Hannah's birthday and we had already decided what we were going to do and get her to celebrate (super low-key), I decided to squeeze in one last thing.  Despite initially thinking that I wanted to pick out special fabric for the doll's clothes, I decided that I had to use what I had on-hand, which made it a little bit of a game too.  But I ran out of stuffing after doing just her arms, so the doll cost me about 5 pounds, and I still have 3/4 of a bag of poly-fill left.

Hannahdoll 4

But I think it was worth it.  Don't you?

Hannahdoll 7

I loosely used this pattern, but added a seam allowance, and changed the hair to look more like Hannah's shoulder-length curls.  But then I gave her a neck, which seems to be a rag doll no-no, because then their head is top heavy and flops around a but.  And it made the supposed-to-be shoulder-length curls into chin-length curls, which wasn't what I was going for.  But I still like it.

Hannahdoll 1Hannahdoll 2

Hannah did too.

Actually, she saw it partially assembled on my desk one day, when the head was attached to the dress, but it wasn't all sewn together or stuffed.  She said, "Ooooo.  Pretty baby dress!" before I covered it up with some papers, so that counts.

When she unwrapped it on her actual birthday, it was in a box with a piece of fabric over it like a blanket, and she snatched up the fabric and snuggled it to her cheek as the doll fell to the floor and said, "Aww, pretty blankie."

And it couldn't hold a candle to the bottle of bubbles that I got her.  Of course. :)  The rascal.

Hannah's Birthday at Kew Gardens, Part 1

Posted on 5:29 AM by Unknown
Are you getting sick of reading about dresses yet?  Because I am just a little sick of writing about them.  I have a few more sewing things to show, a few of the best actually, but even though I am excited to show them off I am getting a little bored writing exclusively about sewing.  So I'm taking a short break and writing about something else, like this.
For Hannah's birthday this year, we got up, opened gifts and hung around the house for a bit, and then we headed over to a favorite, Kew Gardens.
Kewgardens 1We packed a picnic and enjoyed the sunshine, and Hannah stuck flowers in Chris' nose while he tried to sleep. :)Kewgardens 4Kewgardens 3Jayce was such a helpful little guy that day, and kept chasing after Hannah who kept trying to make a run for it in every direction while we ate.  Luckily, it is a big enough place that we can give her some free reign to run around and still keep an eye on her, but whenever she started to get a bit too far away, Jayce would go round her up and drag her back our way.Kewgardens 5But eventually we stopped torturing them with eating and let them get on with the playing. Kewgardens 12There is an indoor bug and garden themed play area that they ran around in for a bit. (They are looking at live butterflies in the picture above.)Kewgardens 6Kewgardens 13Kewgardens 9Kewgardens 8Kewgardens 10Kewgardens 11Then we eventually headed outside to play.Kewgardens 14I got this dress for Hannah for her 1st birthday, but it ran big, and she ran small, so it literally was down to her feet.  This year it fits great, and I thought a little "party scene" dress was just right for a 2nd birthday full of fun.Kewgardens 15After we played on the playground for a bit we decided to explore the grounds, and ended up in one of the greenhouses that has an aquarium in the bottom level.  Kewgardens 18Jayce was enamored.  He seriously loves fish and fish stuff, so he thought it was great.Kewgardens 16Kewgardens 17Kewgardens 19More soon.

The Floral A-Line: AKA, My Favorite

Posted on 7:10 AM by Unknown
Floralaline 6At the beginning of the month Chris left for a conference that would take him away for 8 days and nights, and let me tell you, I was not looking forward to that.  On the morning that he left, Hannah and I dropped Jayce off at school, headed over to Starbucks for breakfast, and then to my favorite little fabric shop, looking for a distraction.  I found it in this incredible, fun, floral fabric.Floralaline 11Then I held onto it for almost a month, making various dresses and tops, but afraid to cut into it until I had found just the right thing because it was just too pretty and perfect.Floralaline 3I decided to do a simple A-line dress, patterned from a dress that she already has.  Nothing fancy or fussy, I wanted the incredible fabric to be the "star."
And then I screwed it up.Floralaline 1I forgot about the seam allowance to attach the top to the bottom.  Then I cut the bodice too tight.  And I re-cut the bottom, disassembled and reassembled the top.  Detached the skirt, re-attached the new skirt, and realized I still had the same problem as before.  And a bunch of other random little things.Floralaline 5And you should see the inside.  The finishing is not beautiful.
But the outside still is, and my girl is beautiful in it.Floralaline 4And it cracks me up how 70s it looks, no matter what I do.  I had her hair in a pony tail the first time that I tried it on her, and it almost seemed like I was trying to make her look 70s-ish.  So I left her hair down this time, but with her fluffy crown and curly flips on the bottom, it still looks 70s.  So we're just going with it.Floralaline 2I added a little pin tuck to the back of the dress, and 2 tiny pink buttons to close the bodice.  I love it.
Floralaline 7The moral of the story is 3-fold, I think.
1.) I love this fabric, so it's my favorite dress, regardless of the (many) flaws.
2.) I need to stop trying to just "wing it."  Patterns and instructions are written by people who know what they're doing, and will save people who don't know what their doing time and frustration in the end.
3.) If #1, then ignore #2.  You got that too, right?

Honorable mention:
If your husband is out of town and you're feeling down, good coffee and pretty fabric can't hurt, and it might help.

On Non-Milk and Hannah's Bubble Shorts

Posted on 8:02 AM by Unknown
Shorts 5When Hannah was a baby, between 6 and 12 months, we discovered that she wouldn't take a bottle, wouldn't have anything to do with formula in any form, and wouldn't drink any version of cow's milk, goat milk, soy milk, etc, just mom's milk.  No pressure.  Also, she was always tiny, which paired with the above information about her eating preferences, caused me lots of anxiety, tears, and panicked conversations with Chris, her doctor, my friends, my mom, etc.  Shorts 6Over a year later, we are still in that same boat.  Though we make sure she gets calcium and healthy fats through various other sources, occasionally a trip to the store causes me to fall into a state of anxiety/despair with all sorts of thoughts of how terrible of a mom I am and how my child hasn't grown, etc.
Shorts 7
A few weeks ago I had one of these mornings out of nowhere when I was trying to find some shorts to fit Miss Hannah.  I tried on and put back the 2T, the 18-24 months, the 12-18 months, and when I was rifling through the pile for 6-12 months I started to cry, and then I just left.  I remembered this pattern for bubble pockets shorts that I'd seen on various different blogs and I came home and bought it.  And then I used some leftover fabric and made the most amazing and adorable shorts ever.
Shorts 4For the record, Hannah doesn't typically wear a size 6-12 months.  She is in that 18-24 month range, and is healthy, happy, and we have no reason to be concerned.  But sometimes that horrible "mom guilt" charges in and takes over.
I had a funny sense of empowerment as I sewed up these beauties while she napped that day.  That my girl is fine and I'm doing just fine as her mom and meeting her needs.  And if we can't find some shorts to fit her, then I'm going to MAKE her some shorts that fit her, and that will be the end of it.Shorts 2Shorts 3And so I did.  And we had yogurt to celebrate my success.
