Goodbye Paci

Oh Dear
People periodically ask me if I think the kids will pick up British accents.
For Jayce, I think, yes. He is in school all day, surrounded by the various accents of his teachers and peers, and it seems pretty inevitable that he'll pick up some of that.
For Hannah, I have always thought, no. She is home with me all day, so presumably she should sound like me.
But I wasn't thinking broadly enough. She is exposed to tv.
The other morning, Peppa Pig's mom said, "Oh dear" and then Hannah parroted her perfectly.
Ooo dee-uh. Oowwhh dee-uhh.
All morning she did this. It was like she was testing the words out. She said it sweetly, a bit high-pitched, calmly, and sometimes almost angrily. And I just grabbed my camera to get video of her in action.
30 seconds of "English Hannah," with a little Will.I.Am and Britney just because. Enjoy. :)

The Christmas Play
We were so excited for Jayce's Christmas play at his school this year. I go crazy for things like this.
We found out a few weeks before that he would be playing Joseph, and we practiced his lines each night. On the morning of, he was prepared.
I was prepared too. I had charged my battery, brought an extra memory card and my tripod, and stood at the door early to get in and get a good seat to record the performance to show the grandparents. I didn't bring my flash because I doubted that I would need it, since I'd be filming the event. I grabbed a seat in the middle near the front, set up my tripod, revealed myself as "a crazy camera lady" to the other parents and was ready to go. But, my plan didn't really work out. It turns out that I didn't need my tripod because I was running around trying to actually get Jayce into the picture, and I definitely needed my flash. Oh well.
The program started with the kids singing, and Jayce sang and did the motions enthusiastically. (In the video I put the play first and the songs second, but it was actually reversed.)
By the time that he moved onto the stage for the nativity play, I think he was a bit spent, or just spaced out. He said his lines well, ushered Mary around the stage, knocked on the doors of the inns, and patted Mary's shoulder reassuringly. But he was spaced out, big time. He didn't sing or really do the motions onstage, he just kind of looked around, wide-eyed. After the play was over we went to give Jayce hugs and tell him how proud we were, and he was still completely spaced out. I guess he was "stage struck?" (Is that a thing?) Anyway, he just kind of stared all around, even when he was with us. Eventually we let him go back with his class.
(Video disclaimer: I thought I was so prepared, with my tripod and a great seat in the middle of the room, but when the kids came in and got in their spots, Jayce was seated at the very end of the row away from the center of stage. So despite my efforts we couldn't see him at all. So I ran over and filmed him on the side, and by the time he made his way back to the middle, I didn't have time to set up the tripod. So, sorry that it's a little shaky!)

Hannah "Reading"
This video could more aptly be named, "Hannah making animal noises along with her books," but that is just not concise enough for me. But it is precious.
Enjoy.

Trot Little Horsey
I love to hear my little girl laugh and on this day she was totally cracking up.
Grandma was being so funny that Jayce had to get in on the action as well.

Jayce and Dixieland Delight
I took this video of Jayce sometime last summer, singing Dixieland Delight. This was just after we realized that he knew all of the words and I was trying to get some evidence, so I got a little video on Chris' phone.
One line in the lyrics says, "holding my lover" which I was a little unhappy with Jayce repeating, but luckily he says, "holding my wubber," which sounds a little nicer coming out of a 3 year old mouth.
Enjoy.

Happy Bather
For the past month or so, now that Hannah has been sitting, I have been giving her a bath in her bigger baby tub, where she's not reclining in the infant bath tub. It's so much better for everyone. She's more covered by the water so she's not cold, I don't have to hold onto her the whole time to keep her from trying to roll out of it, etc.
The first month she was pretty passive in there, just sitting sweetly and turning whatever toy I had given her over and over in her hands. But now, she does a bit of dancing.
It's kind of like she thinks that she is in the exersaucer bouncing. She kind of bounces her whole body up and down, which kind of works in a sitting position, while her legs kick under the water and she flails her arms about. I often surrender a washcloth to her to bite while I wash her as well.
Chelsea got a little video of this bath time sass the other day on her phone. I'm so glad she did, I just love video documentation.

Video Love
I haven't posted videos of Jayce in a while and I think it is definitely time. He's become a little singing machine these past few months, often bursting into songs that we didn't even know that he knew! Last week Jayce was in a particularly sassy mood and was actually performing on demand, so I was able to catch some of my favorites in full (for the most part) and on video!
My favorites are Jesus Loves Me (particularly sweet), and Twinkle Twinkle, in which the star shines "like a dino."
Enjoy!

Sweet Birthday Songs
When Chris and Jayce sang happy birthday to me last week, I was surprised that Jayce knew the words and tempo, he was really good at it! Actually, it was pretty stinkin' adorable, especially given how cute any songs are out of kids this age. So I got him to sing to me again on camera. I have 2 versions, a "Happy To You" and a "Happy Birthday Mo-om." They are both perfect.

The Final Countdown
It's been a while since I've put some videos on here, so I grabbed the camera while Jayce and I were playing outside the other day. I thought he was going to show off some of his t ball skills, but I think he got a little distracted "preparing" to hit the ball.
The second video is kind of random, but it makes Jayce laugh every time, so I thought I'd share. He thinks he's on a pogo stick.

Being Married is Like Having A Color Television Set, You Never Want to Go Back to Black & White
I am a sucker for sweet old people, particularly sweet old couples.
I love the movie When Harry Met Sally, partially because it has these short clips scattered throughout the movie of older couples talking about some aspect of their relationship. It's so sweet.
This is also why I found the movie Up to be super sad. But it's a wonderful story.
My grandparents have one of those sad but beautiful love stories.
My grandpa had various health issues towards the end of his life, a few heart attacks among other things. I remember a few instances when all of the family members came into town, thinking that those days were probably his last, but he always pulled through. He would surprise everyone by coming home from the hospital, a little weaker or worse off, but still kicking.
My grandma, on the other hand, declined very rapidly. The details are a bit fuzzy because I was young when this all happened, but she was sick, they found out that she had cancer, and she passed away about 4 months later.
My grandma passed away during the day. That evening, my grandpa passed as well. It was incredibly sad, but also terribly lovely and romantic.
They had a dual funeral. There were 2 nights of calling hours to accommodate the people who came to offer condolences and share their fond memories of the couple. The line wrapped around the room and out the front door of the funeral home. They certainly were loved and many came to say goodbye.
I'm feeling a bit sentimental today because Mom sent me home with a box of "stuff" from her house, and as I was going through it, I pulled out several items that belonged to my grandma. I'm so happy to have them.
Furthermore, I saw this video the other day on a friend's blog and had to share it. It is impossible to see it and not sit around day dreaming about your grandparents love stories, or your own. I should warn you that it's sad, but like many sad things, it's still worth it.

Egg Dancing
This is one of those things that I considered not posting about, because it's a little embarrassing. But it is one of those little games that has stuck, so here it is, on record. The egg dance.
One afternoon last week, Jayce and I were playing with his little plastic eggs. These have kept their novelty factor from Easter because I keep putting them away when he's not looking. As in, all the way away, high in the cupboard where they can't be seen or reached. So every few weeks he will suddenly remember them and ask for them. Then we'll pull them back out, start naming the colors, counting them, sorting them, throwing them, pretend eating them, etc.
Anyway, back to last week. Jayce had just given me 2 eggs to hold while he was playing with the others. My eggs were blue and pink, obviously male and female, so I decided that they should dance. I took one in each hand, and started bouncing them around on the floor, going, "Boo ba dooba doobie dobbie doobie dooba dooba, egg dance! Doobie doobie doobie dooba, egg dance!"
Jayce sat for a few seconds, watching his mom's craziness. He then started dipping his shoulders to the beat and eventually got up and starting bouncing around, saying, "Dooba dooba dooba dooba, egg dance!!" Throughout the afternoon, he would periodically bring me an egg for each hand, get a few eggs for himself, declare, "Egg dance!!" and then we would start dancing. When Chris got home, he got in on the action too, but with a lot more flare. He would kick his leg up and let Jayce run underneath it and do jump spins. Jayce loves it.
It is now a thing. We egg dance every day now, and eggs don't even need to be a part of the process. One person just has to declare, "Egg dance!" and everyone has to participate.
This is, perhaps, the best part about having a 2 year old. You never know what random little comment or action is going to become the new latest craze in your household. It's kind of a big responsibility. And it's kind of fun.
A little egg dancing demo. Only Jayce is participating in these egg dances, which is why they have been made public.
This one is primarily for the grandparents. A little egg dancing, a little counting, some colors, and a big sweetie.

Hadley Ann Morrison
Congratulations to Matt and Melanie on the birth of their beautiful new baby girl, Hadley! She was born April 21, 6lbs 7oz, 19 inches long.
We are so excited for them and bummed that we couldn’t be there yesterday. We talked to Jayce about his new cousin throughout the day and I thought that he could send a little message her way. We had a few takes, he lost patience quickly and easily.
We love you Matt, Melanie and Hadley! We can’t wait to see you all!

Friday Five
I have so many mini things to share here, and the time just keeps getting further and further away from me, so I think that the only way for me to get through them is to turn to bulleted lists, which for the record, gosh I love so much. :) I’ve said before that my friend Tiffany does a Five for Friday, which I love, so I am borrowing it today. Thanks Tiffany!
1.) A few weeks ago, instead of leaving me with my allotted 2 cups of coffee, Chris left me with 1 and less than a half. Determined to make the most of it, I put it in a small mug to try to make it seem like there was more and trick myself into being satisfied with it. But when I finished, I set it too close to the edge of the table, Jayce got a hold of it (empty), it fell and broke.
The mug was a souvenir from this amazing German market that we frequented during the Christmas season while we lived in Scotland. It was so satisfying to stand out in the brisk Scottish winter, sipping on mulled wine from one of these mugs while you chatted with friends or browsed the German goods that were for sale.
2.) Which brings me to item #2. I have other mugs from that market so all is not lost, but it brings back a debate that Chris and I often have about functional souvenirs like this. I say use them, he says don’t. I had already ruined 2 mugs that we brought back from Rome, which had beautiful sepia toned depictions of St Peter’s Square and the Coliseum, but after a careless run in with the dishwasher they were reduced to 2 plain white mugs. If I keep using these sorts of things, eventually they will all be broken, cracked or completely ruined. But if I just put them up high and never take them down, then I won’t periodically smile and run my thumb over the design on the side, remembering the circumstances in which they were purchased.
3.) Over the last few weeks, Jayce has decided that it is finally time to start trying to talk, instead of being satisfied to call everything “ga” or “da ya.” It is such a relief to hear the variety of sounds that are now pouring out with minor prompting. When asking him to say please, I used to think, “Just make ANY of the sounds in that word. The P, or the E, or the S…just not ga!” And now, for some unknown reason all of those sounds are coming together. I guess all of those people who said, “He’ll start when he’s ready,” were right.
4.) I’m making my first trip to Chicago this weekend to be the second shooter on a wedding with Christine, as I’ve said. I found out this week that the wedding will be at the historic Old St Patrick’s Church, the oldest church in Chicago which is beautiful, but incredibly strict, so that should be an interesting experience. After the ceremony we will be taking a party bus around the city for 2 hours to photograph the wedding party at various Chicago sites, before heading on to the reception. Isn’t that crazy?! Like, crazy in a good way. What a fun thing to do, and a lucky way for me to be able to see some of Chicago’s best!
5.) The other day I fixed Jayce a smoothie, as I have many times before, and set him down in his high chair to enjoy. I went to get some clothes in the other room when I heard him start cracking up. I got my video camera and tried to remain inconspicuous at first, as the camera is usually the best way to get him to stop whatever he is doing, but it turns out that whatever he was doing was more interesting than me with the camera.
It’s a little bit gross, in that, “kid with food on their face” kind of way. But despite that, it is cute in that, “kid laughing hysterically” kind of way. Below is Take #2, once I realized that my presence wouldn’t deter him in the least.
I think bubble blowing was the cause for all of the hilarity. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

The Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly
If you ever get around my brother for a minute, ask him about the time that I gave him his first buttered popcorn flavored jelly belly. It involves him driving me home from work one night, me giving him this jelly bean, him not liking it, spitting it out, asking for something else to get the taste out of his mouth, and me giving him a few more of the same. And repeat. It’s better when he tells it. And it was hilarious for me!
So I thought I’d see what happened when I gave Jayce one of these jelly beans. Unfortunately it was not quite as dramatic as with my brother. Jayce persevered. Even though he didn’t like it, it was a jelly bean, and jelly beans would be eaten.

He Likes That Boom Boom Pow
I think that I have mentioned before that Jayce sometimes watches CMT with Chris, and now knows that when he hears country music, he should stomp his foot, clap his hands, or smack his hand on his leg along with the beat.
Last week in the car, I heard Jayce singing “Boom boom boom” along with the Black Eyed Peas on the radio. Later on in the day, he came into the kitchen, pointed up at the radio and asked for “Boom Boom Boom.” And then started breaking it down.
Though Chris is responsible for the country “dancing,” I am not responsible for this.
