She's A Chef
I considered not having Hannah dress up for Halloween this year. Everyone kept telling me how Halloween isn't really celebrated much here, neither Jayce nor Chris had classes the week of Halloween so there would be no school parties, and truthfully, my mind has been in Christmas mode since September. But a few weeks ago I noticed that the coffee shop that we love had a few child's aprons for sale. I tried one on Hannah, it was HUGE but she looked insanely cute, and it immediately sealed the deal for me. She had to be a chef.
It also works into my plan to subliminally plant the idea that "cooking is fun" in my kids' heads, so that they can take over for me sooner than later.
Right Hannah? Right.
Anyway, I made a quick trip to my favorite little fabric shop, spent entirely too much time agonizing over trivial details about the design, (1 large pocket or 2 small? Trim it with bias tape or no?), and 3 days (aka: nap times) later was completely finished.
I LOVE the teeny tiny little pleated pockets, the perfect size for those teeny little hands. I made the pants with a fun citrusy-patterned fabric using Dana's pajama pants tutorial, and found Delia's perfect pizza hat tutorial literally the morning after I finished the apron. It was fate. And people have been going crazy over that tiny (but floppy) little hat. Including me.
The pants fit perfectly. And it reminded me of the age-old truth that EVERYTHING is cuter in miniature. Her little apron is smaller than a dish towel. Do you know how cute it is to see a baby walking around with a smaller-than-a-dish-towel sized apron? Insanely cute. It's a happy maker.
I have been planning to get the kids a little kitchen for Christmas and make a few little homemade items to go with it. So now I can cross this off of my "Halloween costume" list and my "Christmas to do" list! Except that Jayce has requested his own apron and hat. Oh well. Sewing the second is always faster and easier than sewing the first, so it will be no problem.
Chris came home while Hannah was cooking in the kitchen. The photo on the right is when she heard him come through the door. She loooves her daddy.
She also loves to bang around pots and pans while I cook, so this is a common occurrence in our house. Now she just looks the part.
Eventually, all of that cooking wore her out, and she had to retire with her bear and recouperate a bit. I can't blame her. Even fake cooking can wear you out.

Autumn and Firemen
Well, autumn has finally arrived around here. Actually it has for the past few weeks. The leaves outside the flat and all along the roads are yellow and orange, and some are still holding onto their green since it has been so wet and chilly. Hopefully they'll still turn a nice bright color.
This time of year has me missing some of the traditions of home and of Lincoln. Several people have pointed out to me that Halloween isn't celebrated as much here as it is in the states. One person said to me, "That's your biggest holiday in America, right? Halloween?" No, it's like 5th or 6th on the list, right? Just a dumb fun one.
But it made me realize that it's not actually the "Halloween Stuff" that I miss so much, aside from Halloween pjs. I'm not big on decking my house out in Halloween decorations, baking spooky little treats or anything like that, but it's the small fall rituals that we have had as a family that I miss. Going to the pumpkin patch, hay rides, carmel apples, fall festivals, apple picking and fresh hot apple cider, those are the things I love. There are a few pumpkin farms around England where we could do these things, but without a car the closest one is 3 1/2 hours away, so we'll be skipping it this year.
But even though Halloween isn't emphasized as much as it is in the states, it's still a holiday we'll be celebrating. And Jayce wanted to dress up as, what else? A Fireman! Better yet, Fireman Sam!! His costume arrived last weekend, and it was just in time, because we've had so many fires in our flat ever since then. Luckily he's always on the job.
He showed off his new costume last weekend to his cousin Hadley and Grandma Debbie on Skype, and we'll be headed out tomorrow. Despite everyone assuring me that Halloween isn't celebrated very much here, everyone is having Halloween parties, so we'll have our pick. There will obviously be pictures after that as well.
Happy almost Halloween!

Halloween: A Dragon and Candy Corn
For Halloween this year, we had a dragon and a candy corn. Basically, we had two little sweeties.
My dragon was more than willing to pose before heading out for candy. It was too cold to take Hannah, so she and I stayed home and I (kind of) dressed her up in Jayce's old costume while we handed out candy.
Chris and Jayce went trick or treating and Chris sent me pictures with his phone so that I could stay in on the action a little bit. But I got some before they left anyway.
I had to wait until the next evening to put Hannah in her real costume, the trick or treating at the dorm. Since it was indoors it worked a lot better with a short-sleeved dress.
A short-sleeved dress + tights + white shoes + new headband. She was sweet enough to eat.
Jayce got a massive amount of candy in the dorms. It was a hit.
Hannah was a little darling, charming everyone and looking so sweet.
Chris was being grumpy and uncooperative about posing for pictures, and he got a dose of "This is Hannah's first Halloween, I made her whole costume, I have a new camera, and it is my birthday week, so I don't care if you don't feel like stopping for pictures." This pep talk worked so well for his attitude that I'm sure you're surprised to see him cropped out of the pictures. :)
It was a full week, since we moved from a few days of Halloween festivities into a few days of birthday festivities. It was great, but it wore me out. I'm looking forward to a few weeks of regularity around here, with normal bedtimes, and without activities every night of the week, before we start into the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Here's hoping.
